There is a definite day coming when Jesus will return. His references to both Noah and Lot describe conditions that will be prevalent in the era preceding His return but his use of one word draws our attention to a central thought in the mind of God.
In each story there was a process leading up to a critical point in time. Noah only predicted the rain up until a certain day, and then God shut the door of the Ark and it began to rain. Lot lived under grace for a period until God inspected the situation and then met with Abraham to work out the “terms” of Sodom’s destruction. After much procrastination on Lot’s part, the angels finally pushed him and his family out of town…but then the fire fell, on a certain day.
Jesus uses these pictures to prepare us for another particular day that will surely come. Like in Noah’s time, God will bear long with that final generation, giving them every opportunity to repent. Like in Lot’s time, He will hold back and work with His own people to get them in the right places of deliverance.
The day will surely come! What kind of day will it be? Jesus specifically calls it a day of “revelation” (verse 30). That is interesting to me because this is the same Greek word John uses for the vision he had of Jesus in the book of “Revelation.” It means, a disclosure or uncovering, thus a day when things will come sharply into the light. Today, we see and know God but in a very obscure and limited way (1 Corinthians13:12). In that day everyone will know exactly who He is…and that includes us, the Church.
Hold onto your salvation and don’t let anyone shake your faith in Jesus, but understand that much of what you think you know is not complete. Many will miss Jesus at His return because they followed something else that came from someone other than Him! Stay in the Word and keep your heart in communion with Him and you will live in revelation all the way up to THAT DAY when He is completely unveiled!
